The Statue of Zeus was one of the seven ancient wonders. It was located in ancient Olympia, Greece and was known as the greatest statue in the ancient world. This statue pictured Zeus, king of the Greek Gods.In present day, this statue no longer exists, but you may still visit the remains of the temple where the statue was placed.
Zeus was known as the God of the Greek God’s. They did many things to honor Zeus, in fact the Olympic Games were held is his admiration. He was also the god of sky and weather god. The statue of this God stood 40 feet tall and showed Zeus seated at his throne. It was made by the Greek sculptor, Phidias in 435 B.C. The statue was made of gold and ivory. Zeus was shown holding his messenger, Nike in his right hand, and a scepter in his left. It was located at the site of the ancient Olympic Games, and many Olympians visited the statue for good luck. Many people considered the temple too plain so in 460 B.C a new temple was built.This statue no longer exists after the temple that it was held in was burnt down about 462 A.D.
Although this statue no longer exists it will still be known as one of the greatest statues ever built.The statue plays a great role in Greek Mythology, and the history of the Olympics.
